M11 is an architecture practice based in Reykjavík, founded in 2015 by architect Hugrún Þorsteinsdóttir and architectural technologist Jón Grétar Magnússon.
We design buildings of different scales and types – from private homes and holiday houses to apartment buildings and commercial projects – and are also involved in detailed planning and the development of larger building projects. The practice works across all stages of a project, from the initial idea and assessment of a site's potential, through design and permitting, to a fully resolved building.
Hugrún and Jón bring different but complementary backgrounds to each project. Architectural and spatial thinking on the one hand, and knowledge of construction, detailing and implementation on the other, have shaped the way the practice works. We believe that a strong idea should carry through to the smallest detail, and that design and execution should form a coherent whole.
We look for solutions grounded in clear principles – the site, its use, the way it is built and the needs of the people who will live or work there. The emphasis is on a strong overall concept, thoughtful architecture and buildings that age well.
Today, M11 is a team of six, working closely with clients, consultants and others involved in bringing each project to completion. We aim to keep the design process personal and direct, regardless of the scale of the project.
